Matt and Laura visited each other once a week and tried to spend as much time as possible together. But soon it was time for them to continue on to college, and they were both aware of the challenges that lay ahead. “Right after we graduated from high school, we were pretty hesitant,” said Laura in an interview with People. “We were like, ‘Do we stay together? Do we try to make it work.’”

These two’s destinies were set to diverge once more, but they were willing to battle for what they want. Laura enrolled at the University of Northern Arizona, while Matt relocated to Chicago in order to attend Columbia College. These two made sure that nothing would ever separate them again, even if they lived far away, like it did after preschool. Laura had no idea that a promise Matt had made in front of a full classroom was still valid today as it had been then.
